Bob Smith has been very active on a number of Florida issues-from protecting the Everglades to leading the fight to keep Elian Gonzalez here in the US. I don't know of V.O. Key's old statement is true that Florida politics is every man for himself. I do know that many Floridians have no idea who any of the candidates are besides Gov. Crist. Smith is an underdog to be sure but every now and then weird things happen in Florida politics (Steve Pajic getting the Dem nomination for governor back in 86, Claude Kirk becoming governor back in 66). I think Smith will be able to get enough of a grassroots operation going, especially when conservatives realize that Marco Rubio is not with them as much as they think he is (for example on immigration). It will be a major task for Smith to raise money. He could barely do it in a small state when he held an important committee chairmanship. It will be even tougher now.
