No, it's not just you, it's the media. The number of Earthquakes so far this year is normal. In fact, 6.3 quakes are really rather small and since this was really deep I would be surprised if there was any more damage than a few unsecured things falling off shelves.

I think that often, the proximity of earthquakes to heavily populated areas affects how heavily discussed they are.

But then, the earthquake in Japan was an anomaly.
