Why is Madeleine McCann so important. Many children go missing/kidnapped each day probably, why should we even raise our eyebrows to the disappearance of this girl? --Nzgabriel | Talk 06:05, 8 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

I think that would go on it's normal talk page, wouldn't it? Thunderhead - (talk) 06:08, 8 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
Not really, because my opinion is that it's not newsworthy, but the amount of news reports (including here in Aotearoa New Zealand) are staggering, meaning that it is newsworthy. --Nzgabriel | Talk 06:37, 8 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
How many missing kids have their posters sent out with every box of Harry Potters, to every book store in every country the book was sold in? She's become a major missing person's case in people's minds. -- Zanimum 14:14, 8 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
News begets news - throughout history of news reporting, some stories become bigger than could possibly be justified. Recent examples include Natalee Holloway in 2005, JonBenét Ramsey in 1996, and the O. J. Simpson murder case in 1994. And I only grudgingly admit that we covered Paris Hilton quite a bit. --SVTCobra 23:07, 8 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
I guess the common thread in my examples is that they all involve blonde females. --SVTCobra 23:09, 8 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

I have paid very little attention to this case - callous as it is - this is another missing child, most do not get this degree of publicity. I'd like to know why she's different and the MSM have paid so much attention to this. --Brian McNeil / talk 22:08, 9 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

I can only speculate why this story got so "popular", but if I had to guess it is because it feeds into people's worst fears. When traveling abroad with your family, the worst scenario has to be to return home without one of your children. In this regard, it is similar to the Natalee Holloway case, which would be sending a child on a trip only to have the kid not return. --SVTCobra 22:19, 9 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
