Comments:Nationalist Party wins Taiwan election

I expect this would probably lead to some relaxation of relations with China. Reunification would be the greatest defusion of the situation long term wise I should think, and I was surprised that the Nationalist Party doesn't rule that out. Sean Heron 09:21, 13 January 2008 (UTC)

Many Taiwanese are simply afraid of (mainland) China invading Taiwan if they talk to overtly of independence. That is why many political parties talk about reunification, while doing nothing about it. Taiwan IS a nation, with its own government, currency, culture and people. What it lacks is world recognition as a country. Djaighan

Thanks for that view point. Are you Taiwanese (I'm assuming you are)?

I can imagine people are not keen on giving up the freedoms they have at the moment by reunifying. But seeing how things are going in Hong Kong, do you think it would have very negative impacts (beyond the obvious of giving up souverenity)? If I sound pro unification, I might clarify that I'm not well enough informed to voice a sound opinion, and generally can understand the sentiment of groups of people that wish to seperate from a bigger state, or wish to retain their independence. I'm just interested in what you see as speaking against. Regards Sean Heron 12:21, 14 January 2008 (UTC)
