They shouldn't apologize - it was a leaked brainstorm, not an official suggestion. Now every time they "brainstorm" in that office they'll have to censor themselves, and future visits will suffer from a lack of creativity.
Not only should the Pope hand out condoms he should have his photo on the packaging wearing one. It would do more for preventing abortions than all his sermons.
