The validity of this article as a news story is, as written, disputed. Wikinews does not publish reports on events that are not sufficiently recent. For synthesis, new details must have come to light within the past five to seven days, and the news event itself must have happened within ten days. Unless sources can be found and a news event chosen to bring this article into compliance with those requirements, the article may be deleted. If any new details from the last five to seven days are newsworthy in their own right then an article could be written with these updates as the actual news event. Exceptions are possible where original reporting adds significant new and newsworthy information to the article.
Please try to resolve objections on the discussion page, or move the article to Wikipedia or another sister project where it may be more relevant. |

On June 23, in the Republic of Dagestan, 20 people were killed and 46 injured when gunmen opened fire on a police station, two orthodox churches and two synagogues. The attacks were separate and happened in the cities of Derbent and Makhachkala. The attackers used automatic weapons and escaped by car. A counter-terrorism operation resulted in deaths of six attackers and by the morning of June 24, Russia's Anti-Terrorism Committee reported the operation to be over.
Three months ago, 145 people were killed in Moscow by the Islamic State. No party has claimed responsibility for the Dagestan attack, but the governor Sergey Melikov said that authorities knew who were behind the attacks, and that they were related to war in Ukraine.
Among the attackers were close relatives of Magomed Omarov, a head of Dagestan's Sergokala central district, and a member of United Russia political party. Omarov was detained and his house searched. He was also expelled from United Russia and on June 25, fired from being a district governor. According to Sergey Melikov this was because some of the attackers were his children. He also said that other district governors would be investigated.
