RSS feed content edit

It would be nice, IMO, if we could have a little more content in the RSS feeds. Ideally the first paragraph from the article, or even the whole article if possible. How could we achieve this technically? Frankie Roberto 22:30, 4 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

I think that it would be plausible to expand the RSS feeds to include a short summary of the articles. I think that this could be done by expanding the parser or generator that's used to automatically update the feeds. It could be modified to place a section of the article (perhaps the first paragraph) in the <description> tags for each item, making a more useful feed. Example: <description>summary</description>. Please let me know if this is possible. TheVault 14:01, 19 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
I also think, a RSS feed with complete content is necessary. Also for third-part developers who want to use Wikinews as a news source for mashups, some API should be provide for easy crawling and querying. 9th Jan 2008 128.100.5.115

Older topics edit

I put together an RSS feed of the "Original Reporting" section. The feed is available at http://www.inic.org/wikinews.xml I also added an external link to the feed on the top of this article. If you do not have an RSS reader, you can view a web based version of the feed at Wikinews Original Reporting RSS Feed Please let me know what you think. I will try to update it daily. Before 1.5 we also used to be able to category RSS feeds, but that died in 1.5 (I think). Bawolff ☺☻  00:07, 12 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

The wikipedia article suggests:

Why not use   everywhere? I think this should be used at least in the most prominent places on the site, as it seems to be generally accepted and easily recognized. Andrewski 22:45, 30 July 2006 (UTC)Reply
We could, but it links funny. Bawolff ☺☻  19:57, 13 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Local/portal feeds? edit

I don't know this RSS stuff that well, but it would be nice to be able to have a feed for my local Houston portal. Especially if it were combined with the main feed. Jordanmills 14:57, 21 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

That would be cool. We could do it if we got Journowiki's feed thing, or we'd need another bot like for the main one. Bawolff ☺☻  23:30, 16 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

RSS Broken? edit

The RSS Feed seems broken for me. It's displaying topics from October 23rd. Why is this? --75.129.241.82 02:12, 27 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

It seems to work now, giving my yesterday and today's stories. I'm glad it works now. --75.129.241.82 16:07, 27 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

RSS broken again edit

It was working quite nicely for the past few weeks... :( Towsonu2003 20:48, 9 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Fixed after 2 days of breakage, thanks :) Towsonu2003 21:23, 9 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

category rss edit

meta:WikiFeeds could sort of provide a DPL-like feed of a single category (ex http://wiki.case.edu/Special:WikiFeeds/rss/newestcategoryarticles/category/Buildings ). looks interesting. Bawolff 07:16, 11 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

RSS broken edit

The RSS feeds for Print Edition and News Briefs don't work. I get the following error message:

Warning: file_get_contents(): URL file-access is disabled in the server configuration in /home/www/mrmwikinews.awardspace.com/xml.php on line 2
Warning: file_get_contents(http://webpages.charter.net/mrmiscellanious/wikinews): failed to open stream: no suitable wrapper could be found in /home/www/mrmwikinews.awardspace.com/xml.php on line 2
I tried contacting mrm about this, he did not respond. I suggest we create a new one on the toolserver. Bawolff 22:35, 19 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Feed for OR edit

Why is that feed broken, and can we fix that? (and by 'me' I don't mean myself, cause I don't know how...). --Steven Fruitsmaak (Reply) 18:23, 8 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

News Brief RSS edit

I noticed the News Brief RSS hasn't been updated for 6 months so I created a new one. I hope that is OK with everyone. --User:Anonymous101 Talk 19:57, 18 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

I have made an effort to contact the person who runs the old news brief RSS (even though it is 6 months abandoned). I also said that I don't mind if that feed is restored. I have not yet recieved a reply so if anyone else knows another way of contacting the person, please contact them and ask them whether they want to restore their Audio Wikinews RSS or if they want me to continue with the feed I created. I contacted them via Wordpress, where the feed was based. --User:Anonymous101 Talk 09:59, 19 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
I tried to contact them via Wikinews - although I can't be sure it was the right person --User:Anonymous101 Talk 12:44, 20 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
I am 90% sure it was User:Munchkinguy who created the feed. This is because of 3 reasons
  1. He added the link to the feed on the Audio Page
  2. He became inactive at virtually exactly the same time as the feed stopped updating
  3. Corecspondence on his talk page gave the impression that he runs the feed. --User:Anonymous101 Talk 13:02, 20 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
I have now E-Mailed him and contacted him on Wikipedia as well. --User:Anonymous101 Talk 13:19, 20 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
I'll give it a try. Its six month abandoned, as no one has done any spoken wn for about 6 mos. Bawolff 22:34, 19 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
I don't think thats the right person. The feed was previously maintained by Terinjokes and MrM to my knowlesge. I was just talking to Adambro on irc, and he said he was going to try to make a feed on the toolserver that reads the wikinews page and automatically updates. Bawolff 23:11, 22 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

I hav just recieved a response from User:Munchkinguy. He did created the feed. If an autimatic feed is created that is brilliant as no work would be required. Also, if an automatic one is created please make it compatible with podcast apps which support ogg if at all possible --User:Anonymous101 Talk 16:18, 23 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Heh. Sorry about that. --Munchkinguy - (talk) 02:58, 9 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Improving "Latest News" Feed edit

Hi everyone, I'd like to make two suggestions:

Well the current feed is not very customizable. There has been talk of switching over to this feed (maintained by User:Cspurrier ) which is a lot more customizable. Personally i feel it'd be better if the body had the first paragraph of article. Thanks for comments. Bawolff 22:51, 6 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for answering. I agree about showing an article snippet. My idea about the date was because when I read the news in an RSS reader (I use Sage) I can't see when it happened. --Gannalech (talk) 16:18, 7 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Original Reporting RSS feed broken? edit

Are the RSS feeds for original reporting broken? Currently, the feed shows the top story as "Singapore Slingers defeat Darwin All-Stars in eighth Singapore Challenge Series game", but on Portal:Original reporting the top result is DS4SEQ discusses daylight savings in Queensland with Wikinews. Copysan (talk) 22:39, 1 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

It will be broken for about a month (along with everything else on the toolsever wikinews related). See https://journal.toolserver.org/toolserver/entry/wherein_mysql_replication_binlogs_and (we're in s3). Bawolff 01:55, 2 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
