Wikinews weather is currently provided using the - somewhat decrepit - WeatherChecker application. We need a new application - preferably run on the toolserver - or some other Wikimedia server. Rick (in)Santorium failed in his efforts to get the XML feeds from NOAA closed to the public, this page is a gateway to the various pieces of information they provide. I'd guess the maps WeatherChecker uses are already on commons as they were sourced from NASA.

As an interim measure an upload tool is required to automate the process. I'll take the hit on the electricity bill of keeping our updates frequent if someone can provide me with a small program to upload newly created files to Commons. I know I don't get Africa and S. America, the maps for these simply don't work for me.

As the Polish wiki has expressed an interest in these I'd want to upload to Commons and have already brought the subject up with them. If anyone is prepared to do the coding on an app for the upload I'll spend the time to give more specific requirements. --Brian McNeil / talk 20:28, 20 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Before you upload this stuff to commons, make sure you talk to them first. (read commons:Commons:WeatherBot:Vote). Bawolff 21:30, 20 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I think pywikipediabot can upload images (don't quote me on that). Bawolff 21:31, 20 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Worst case the wikimediaengine I wrote for the Commonplace program allows uploading and is cross-platform. So if it comes down to uploading files again, tell me how you'd like the program to operate and I'll write something. -- IlyaHaykinson 22:33, 20 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
