Is image use policy got the correct visibility?

Computron wanted to illustrate news subjects with pictures from Twitter and Instagram. This is a nice idea, as it's the medias where people upload news-related stuff. But it's a little tricky to get permissions. Computron had a nice idea: ask directly licensing permissions on Twitter.

This is a nice idea, but clumsy applied: he asked right to use the pictures for Wikipedia, and not Wikinews, so it's not valid.

When we noticed this situation on Wikimedia Commons, we tried to clean a little bit the files. But Computron reuploaded some media directly on Wikinews, to avoid Wikimedia Commons licensing reviewing. They don't have fair use rationale. They don't have Wikinews-only permission. So, there are currently copyright infringement, but could fairly be regularized with more tweets.

Special:Upload contains the sentence Every single usage should have a Fair Use Rationale.. Computron seems to be an intelligent and creative contributor, with nice ideas, so how he missed the warnings? On the specific images, you're quite right of course, the permissions situation needs cleaning up.

Regarding confusions over messages — people mostly don't even notice words that are said to them automatically; such words seldom have any meaning (seriously, I have to swear on a stack of bibles, on penalty of giving up my first-born child, that I have read and understood every word of this 500-page licensing agreement, otherwise I cannot open the shrink wrap... on the licensing agreement?). This is part of why I believe to make the sisters work (even Wikipedia, looking down the road) what we need is interactive tools programmable via wiki markup, so that guiding users through complex processes becomes part of what wiki contributors themselves can help to do. Which is exactly what I've been working on developing for the past year and a half, and am finally getting somewhere with. --Pi zero (talk) 15:40, 15 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Policy edits

I've just made an edit that touches quite a bit of the policy. If you review the linked-to diff, you'll see one of the main changes is moving away from just images to media; we've done some interesting stuff with video in the last year or-so, the policy should reflect that.

As-mentioned on WN:AAA, I think a flowchart might better-explain the thought process to be applied in getting fair use images. But, we simply can't have photoessays consisting solely of such. Yes, they've happened in the past - prior to the WMF resolution - but, if they leave an article being not worth anyone reproducing, as they can't use the images, they're not suitable for Wikinews. --Brian McNeil / ^talk 19:59, 27 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
