Wikinews:Arbitration Committee/2010 election/Judging

Latest comment: 13 years ago by Benny the mascot in topic C628's semi-retirement

This is the page where the election committee will consider motions. Current members are Benny the mascot (talk · contribs), Blurpeace (talk · contribs), and Fetchcomms (talk · contribs). All motions considered by the election committee must be approved by a simple majority of its members. All election committee members must be given clear notice and opportunity to comment, and vote, on a motion before the decision is finalized. Those not on the election committee may comment on any motion being considered by the committee. All other rules may be found on WN:ACE10.

Log edit

  1. Diego Grez (talk · contribs) cast an oppose vote against Tempodivalse. The vote was ruled invalid by Benny the mascot.
  2. BKCW8 (talk · contribs) voted for Bawolff, but the vote was ruled invalid by Benny the mascot because the voter did not make a mainspace edit before June 1.
  3. Tempodivalse (talk · contribs) withdrew, citing "personal issues and overall disenchantment with the project."

Appeals edit

All administrators and election committee members are authorized to strike any votes cast on the voting page they feel are invalid. All users have the right to file an appeal with the election committee in this section.

Motions edit

BRS and Tristan Thomas edit

Forgive my rather short comment, as I am in a rush in real life, but will we accept BRS's and Tristan Thomas's votes? (Wikinews_talk:Arbitration_Committee/2010_election#My_absence) I really think we shouldn't, because 1) it's out of process and 2) they didn't get to consider Cspurrier's nomination. Thoughts? Benny the mascot (talk) 22:46, 28 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

I'm leaning toward no, simply because it's not very fair to Cspurrier. In real life (in the U.S., at least), there is absentee voting, and I see no reason why we can't take these two comments as a good-faith intent request. However, they didn't have the opportunity to recognize Cspurrier's candidacy, so I say sorry to BRS and Tris. fetch·comms 20:22, 29 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
Well said, fetchcomms. Let's wait for Blurpeace and other interested contributors to comment before we vote. Benny the mascot (talk) 04:28, 30 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
I'll have to agree with disallowing the votes, solely because BRS and Tris had not been able to review Cspurrier's candidacy. Blurpeace 08:05, 30 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Motion to discount requested votes of users Tristan Thomas and Blood Red Sandman edit

The election committee moves to discount the absentee votes of users Tristan Thomas and Blood Red Sandman because they were not aware of Cspurrier's nomination and were therefore unable to review him.

Motion passed 3–0, blah blah blah. If I had been informed that this page for motions didn't actually require "real" motions, I wouldn't have bothered :P. fetch·comms 02:43, 31 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Results edit

The official rules state that:

  • Following the closure of voting, the six candidates with the highest number of eligible votes will form the new Arbitration Committee.
  • In the event of a tie, it is the responsibility of the election committee to schedule a run-off election, which should last not less than seven days. An interim Arbitration Committee will be formed with the clearly elected members.
  • Primary responsibility for the validation of votes, and their legitimacy, lies with the election committee.
  • The election committee is tasked with declaring the new members of the Arbitration Committee following the election, and any required run-off election(s).
  • All motions considered by the election committee must be approved by a simple majority of its members. All election committee members must be given clear notice and opportunity to comment, and vote, on a motion before the decision is finalized. Those not on the election committee may comment on any motion being considered by the committee.
  • If the incumbent Arbitration Committee is conducting business on July 31, then it will continue to serve as arbitrators until such business is concluded. The new Arbitration Committee will consider requests that are filed on or after August 1.

The results, as I find it, are:

  1. Bawolff, 17 in support
  2. Pi zero, 13 in support
  3. Cirt, 12 in support (tie)
  4. Gopher65, 12 in support (tie)
  5. C628, 10 in support
  6. Skenmy, 9 in support (tie)
  7. Brian, 9 in support (tie)
  8. Cspurrier, 8 in support
  9. Tristan Thomas, 6 in support

This means that users Bawolff, Pi zero, Cirt, Gopher65, and C628 will serve on the Arbitration Committee, and a runoff election will be held to determine whether Skenmy or Brian will be the sixth member of the committee. Any issues with my counting? fetch·comms 01:29, 31 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Nope, I came up with the same thing. Shall we schedule the runoff election right away, like August 2-8? Benny the mascot (talk) 02:44, 31 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
OK, if Blurpeace has no issues, we should be able to declare an interim committee of Bawolff, Pi zero, Cirt, Gopher65, and C628 before tomorrow, and I'm fine with the runoff lasting from the 2nd–8th. So,

Declaration of interim Arbitration Committee and scheduling of runoff election edit

The election committee declares an interim Arbitration Committee of users Bawolff, Pi zero, Cirt, Gopher65, and C628, and a runoff election is scheduled for August 2–8, 2010, to decide whether Skenmy or Brian will become the last member of the committee.

(Yay for useless bureaucratic actions, although the rules do say, "All motions considered by the election committee must be approved by a simple majority of its members. All election committee members must be given clear notice and opportunity to comment, and vote, on a motion before the decision is finalized.") fetch·comms 03:09, 31 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

C628's semi-retirement edit

C628 has unfortunately declared his semi-retirement, so I think this means that the runoff can be closed early with both Brian and Skenmy becoming Arbitrators if C628 confirms that he no longer wishes to serve on the ArbCom. fetch·comms 20:29, 2 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Per Skenmy's email, I confirm I do not wish to serve on ArbCom; apologies for the mess I created. Regards, C628 (talk) 15:38, 3 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
Just to clarify - I quickly emailed C628 and asked him to weigh in on this discussion --Skenmy talk 15:56, 3 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Motion to close runoff election, declare Brian and Skenmy members of Arbitration Committee edit

The election committee, having received C628's resignation, closes the runoff election and declares Brian and Skenmy the last members of the Arbitration Committee.
