Neither Germany of France opposed georgian membership... They just opposed the time when that was supposed to happen. Of course Georgia will become a NATO member. That was always evident.

Then how do you interpret mr. Saakashvili's "wish" to negotiate with the russians? You must understand that, in politics, you say what you need to say, not what you should or want. Angela Merkel went to Russia and said what the russians wanted to hear... She went to Georgia and said what Saakashvili wanted to hear. The german foreign minister, for example, does not seem agree with her remark. Russia will not be marginalized. In fact, what is happening is the other way around. After the Merkel visit, Saakashvili now declares that he wants to negotiate with the russians, and to end this in a "civilized manner". How do you interpret this then? georgia and nato

first mistake was to underrate russia's ability and willingness to invade and support seccessionsts. second mistake was to start with insufficient georgian military power to stop an eventual russian intervention which was likely to be expected. the georgian presidet started the whole thing like a casino adventure. georgia a nato member and what then if georgia becomes again target of russian retaliation? can there be any doubt that geogia's presidet will abuse nato mambership as a carte blanche for a new engagement with russia? peter fuchs, peter.fuchs@centrum.sk —Preceding unsigned comment added by 78.141.94.250 (talk) 13:00, 18 August 2008 (UTC)

Ms. Merkel is lying Georgians because she refused MAP for Georgia in 2008 Bucharest summit and in Nato foreign ministers meeting in Dec 2008. She agreed to 'beef up" Nato-Georgia Commision to intergrate Georgia into NATO but in fact it only save face because Nato's aim is to "keep the russian out". Is the Russian troops in or out in Georgia now?

After Russia routed Georgia in the five day war Ms. Merkel feel guilty so she talked so.
