Lucky escape

I fully doubt Panek was guilty but he must have looked damn suspicious; an unexpected foreign national preaching conversion in a country where Islamic State amongst others loom large is not a safe thing to be.

His mental health seems to be the main thrust of his actions and it's a stroke of excellent luck the Czech embassy has stuck it out in Syria and was willing to step in. Not that I expect the Szydlo administration to be tactful negotiators, but they were on the back foot from the start.

My impression from the Radio Prague source is that the Czech ambassador in Damascus, Eva Filipi, is something special. The source notes Czech law prohibited ambassadors from serving past the age of 70, and the Czech parliament changed the law for her sake so she could continue serving.

Agreed. How smooth the world would be with a bunch of people like that.
